Hannes Meyer was a Swiss architect theorist, designer and second director of the Bauhaus in Dessau from 1928 to 1930. He was appointed by Walter Groupius as the head of the Bauhaus architecture department in 1919. While ultimately a controversial figure, and one who politicized his work more than most, Meyer like the other vanguards of the Bauhaus movement believed in the transformative value of architecture and design. For him, buildings had to be useful for people and for society. Functionalism was more than not wasting money on ornament or building more space than was necessary. It meant an efficient structure and practical construction. It meant materials with properties that produced an environmental benefit for the occupants.
